The student group is ran by University of Manchester students and is open to all UK students.
Every Tuesday evening we meet up in small groups to discuss and challenge each other's views and ideas on a particular EA topic (usually based on a short talk or article we look at beforehand). There is a facilitator in each group to help keep the discussion lively and inclusive, and after the discussion, we all join back up to hang out.
We run socials every month, some themed, and others just a chance for people to meet up and get to know each other better. You can find all our socials on our facebook page, and we'll also notify you about them if you subscribe to our mailing list.
Once every semester we run a book club on an EA text. In the book club small groups meet up to discuss a few chapters of the book, led by a facilitator. There is also a selection of socials across the duration of the club. Subscribe to our mailing list to get notified when the next one is starting!
Each month we run a speaker event, either featuring an external speaker, or someone from within our group talking about a cause area they are involved in. Sign up to our mailing list to hear about them!
Hi, I'm Tom and I'm the President this year. Over the year I'll be managing the committee, running our weekly discussion groups, and organising our speaker events. I study philosophy, and I'm particularly interested in longtermist cause areas as well as priorities research. Outside of EA I enjoy competitive debating, squash, and playing in my jazz band. Feel free to get in touch with me on Facebook if you have any questions about EA Manchester, my cause areas, or just want to chat.
Hi I'm Hannah, I'm a second year studying International Disaster Management and Humanitarian Response. I help coordinate some of the general society bits and bobs like running events, facilitating the weekly discussion groups and managing some of the social media. In my spare time, I like to read and I've recently started boxing.
Hi, I am Mark, the treasurer and a second-year undergraduate studying mathematics. I am very passionate about dual technologies (biotechnology and its applications), long-term economic growth, and the future of artificial intelligence. Outside of EA I enjoy scientific research, playing quidditch and learning new languages.
Hi I’m Dana and I’m responsible for society communications. That means you’ll get my weekly email updates and Facebook posts. I’m interested in developing clean meat technology and am pursuing research in developing lab-made leather products. Outside of EA I enjoy performing stand-up comedy and making super-unhealthy cakes.
