City Group

The city group is comprised of professionals living in Manchester. It runs some events exclusively for non-students, but often runs joint events with the university group such as speaker events, socials and reading groups.

Events

Weekly

Discussion Groups

Every Wednesday evening we meet up in small groups to discuss and challenge each other's views and ideas on a particular EA topic (usually based on a short talk or article we look at beforehand). You can find the event description and links on our facebook page.

Monthly

Speaker Events

Each month we run a speaker event, either featuring an external speaker, or someone from within our group talking about a cause area they are involved in. Sign up to our mailing list to hear about them!

Termly

Book Club

Once every semester we run a book club on an EA text. In the book club, small groups meet up to discuss a few chapters of the book, led by a facilitator. There is also a selection of socials across the duration of the club. Subscribe to our mailing list to get notified when the next one is starting!

Aaron Boddy
Hi I’m Aaron and I’m one of the organisers of the EA Manchester City Group . I became very interested in EA in 2018 when I signed the Giving What We Can Pledge. I completed a PhD in AI in 2019 and co-authored the ‘2020 Survey of Artificial General Intelligence Projects for Ethics, Risk, and Policy’ at the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute. I will form part of the 2021 cohort of the Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program and aim to co-found an effective charity.

Hi I’m Dana and I’m responsible for society communications. That means you’ll get my weekly email updates and Facebook posts. I’m interested in developing clean meat technology and am pursuing research in developing lab-made leather products. Outside of EA I enjoy performing stand-up comedy and making super-unhealthy cakes.
Tom Blake
Hi, I'm Tom and I'm helping organise some of the joint events between the university group and the city group. I study philosophy, and I'm particularly interested in longtermist cause areas as well as priorities research. Outside of EA I enjoy competitive debating, squash, and playing in my jazz band. Feel free to get in touch with me on Facebook if you have any questions about EA Manchester, my cause areas, or just want to chat.
